Rules and FAQ

General Rules

Maturity
All players must be at least 18 years or older. This game is rated R and will deal with mature subject such as violence, sex, racism, addiction, ect. All players must accept this in order to play. No one will be expected to participate in something they feel uncomfortable with (i.e. smut, character death) but it will be in the game.

Drama
OOC drama is not tolerated. This includes but is not limited to: OOC/IC line-crossage, god-modding, wanking, whining, tattle-tailing, mud-slinging, metagaming, complaining, harassing, stalking, cliques, and any other generally annoying behavior. If you have any questions as to what counts as drama (or if you don't understand any of the above terms) feel free to contact a mod.

Character Limits
You are allowed two characters to begin with. After being the game for two weeks, you are allowed to apply for more, but acceptance will be based on past performance. If the mods feel you are not being active enough with your current characters, you will not be given more. Aside from this caveat, there is not limit to how many characters you are allowed to take.

Activity
Every character is expected to produce three items every month. This can be any combination of logs or journal entries. This is only the minimum and we encourage all players to go above and beyond.

Communication
Every player is expected to provide a reliable form of communication, either e-mail or some form of Instant Messenger (AIM preferred).

Characters

The Sue
Your character is special. Otherwise you wouldn't be playing them! We don't except every character to be Joe Average, but we do expect that you keep things realistic. Aurors have to go through 3 years of training, so they can't be full-fledged at 18, Heads of Departments can't be in their 20s, no one is a master of 12 different crazy skills, and not every pureblood is filthy-stinkin-rich. Make sure there's a good bit of variety and balance in your character so that they are well-rounded and fun to play with.

PBs
Play-bys need to be age-appropriate and match the physical description given for your character. Some leeway is given (especially with coloring) but try to get as close as possible.

Original Characters
Anyone wishing to play an original character must be an incumbent player with a canon character already taken. There are two exceptions to this: 'name only' canon characters and dark creature characters.

Family and Backstory
If applying for a character who already has family members in the game, the new character must comply with the already-accepted character's backstory.

However, if you get in contact with the incumbent player and mutually agree on a change to the family backstory, this is acceptable.

Creatures
Dark Creature applications must comply with this post and will become closed if we get too many.

Homosexual Characters
Statistics estimate that anywhere between 4 to 10% of any given population in the world is 'hard' gay, with the number increased slightly if one includes bi or 'sort of' gay people.

Also, homosexuality in Great Britain was considered illegal until 1967. By 1979 (this game) homosexuality had only been decriminalized in England and Wales and was still considered illegal in Scotland and Ireland. Even when it was allowed, it was only considered legal if the sexual act happened between two consenting males aged 21 or over, in private, at one's own residence. Homosexuals were subject to discrimination and had little to no rights or protection under the law against hate crimes, unfair hiring practices, ect.

So, yes your character can be gay. But if we get too many gay characters we will put a cap on it and if your character is openly or flamboyantly gay, they should expect some social consequences.

Game Play

Social game vs Plot game
Why can't it be both? While there will be a plot to the game and mod-controlled events that the entire cast is expected to respond to, we encourage any and all types of play from our players.

Canon game vs AU game
All canon that happened before November 1st, 1978 is to be kept in place. After that, however, we are considered AU and are making up our own story. Players do not need to feel restricted by the need to make their characters match canon events.

If you would like to change your character's backstory so that it conflicts with stated canon events prior to 1978, then you may so long as there is a reason why the rest of the world believes something else happened.

Plots (aka Can I do ____ ?)
If you have a particular plot in mind and you have permission from all players who will be involved/affected by it, then the answer is 'yes.' If the plot you have in mind will affect the setting (i.e., the Ministry or the Daily Prophet or masses of NPCs would notice) then you need to run it past the mods. Most likely you'll be approved, we just need to know in order to keep everything on the same page.

We fear not the baby-plague, we fear not the ships. Bring it all on, so long as it doesn't affect your (the players) ability to react to plot events. Keep it realistic and keep it fun and that's all we ask.

For anything rated PG-13 and up, put a warning in the thread header.

Journals
See this post for an in-depth answer.

Time
Gameplay happens in real-time, so one day in game = one day in real life. For convenience, even though they don't match, we'll keep the 2009 days of the week/dates and just slap a '1978' on the end.
