This is later considered the first crime officially attributed to Death Eaters Dumbledore creates the Order of the Phoenix 1972 An explosion in a commercial section of Newcastle kills 17 muggles and 4 wizards, both Ministry and Muggle officials blame it on muggle terrorists. The phrase 'Death Eaters' becomes known to the public as a blood supremest group, but the group's members are either unknown or officially deny involvement 1973 Miriam Wortrode writes a series of editorial pieces to the Daily Prophet in support of Death Eater ideals. Two Aurors go missing while on assignment, MoM denies Death Eater involvement Death Eaters adopt the Dark Mark as their symbol, the first Death Eaters receive their tattoos 1974 Bartemius Crouch Sr. becomes Head of the MLE A family outside of Stoke-on-Trent is murdered in their home, the Dark Mark appears in the sky over their house Attacks on muggle locations continue and are blamed on muggle terrorists 1975 A series of vandalism and violent attacks occurs on Diagon Alley, focusing on muggleborns, half-bloods, and blood traitors, the MoM denies claims that the Death Eaters are responsible, which they later have to revise when it becomes clear that they are Bartemius Crouch Sr. announces his intent to 'stamp out' Death Eater activities, beginning an increasingly brutal campaign against known and suspected Death Eaters 1976 The Minister's chief Undersecretary is kidnapped out of his home and his body is discovered three days later in Diagon Alley Ministry aurors arrest Herman Willtrain under suspicion of being a Death Eater, when he resists his wife and eldest child are accidentally killed in the fight. Willtrain is sent to the Dementors without trial, despite being innocent, encouraging wide-spread fear of the Ministry that almost matches that of the Death Eaters 1977 Werewolves lead by Fenrir Greyback attack a magical community outside Belfast and are intercepted by both aurors and OotP members.
